Whale watching in Abrolhos
Every year, from July till November humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to the coast of Brazil to procreate and to breast-feed their nestlings. In this period males exert themselves in order to conquer a female. They perform real shows of acrobatics with impressive jumps, in which more than half of their gigantic bodies come out of the water. The best place to see this phenomenon is no doubt around the archipelago of Abrolhos, 70 km of the coast of South Bahia. In addition, the archipelago is part of an marine reserve that harbors a rich and unique marine live sustained by extensive coral banks.
Starting point for whale watching in Abrolhos is the town of Caravelas, from where boats leave early in the morning for open sea to sail the 70 km to the archipelago. There are several agencies that organize boat trips to the archipelago. They offer programs of 1 or more days which combine whale watching with a visit to one of the islands of the archipelago and scuba diving. Ecotravel has selected a program with a 1-day visit to Abrolhos that provides an ideal opportunity to see the whales and observe the unique marine life of the archipelago. However, for those who want to spend more time in Abrolhos Ecotravel can extend the program with 1 to 3 overnights on the boat.

The island is home to several species of seabirds that have their nest there and nurture the chicks until they are able to fly. The visit is an excellent opportunity to observe the birds at short distance. After lunch on board there is an opportunity to go snorkeling in the calm shallow waters between the islands to observe the unique coral species, of which several only occur in Abrolhos. The coral banks are home to many colorful fish and other interesting creatures like mollusks, sponges and crustaceans. For those that want to see more it is possible to make a dive accompanied by an experienced dive master.
